Friday 7th April: Vienna Day 1 : Mummified bodies in the Crypt (Michaelergruft)
we arrived the night before, we were staying at Robert, whilst the rest of the bands were staying at an hotel.
Our first day there was wet! so so cold, windy and downpour.
On Friday our first visit was Michaelergruft, we did the crypt tour (sadly no photos) but what a wonderful unusual environment, bodies don't decompose in it, so you get to see mummies in decorated open coffins, arms folded across their chest, some still in their burial finery. More than 4000 coffins, most beautifully handpainted with flowers and skulls. Hundreds of mummified corpses (a few on displays). You only see a small section but you can see from peeking in open doorways how large it is, you can see rooms going on for ever lined with coffins and many of the chambers have not even yet been opened to be restored. Took a few photos in the church above but added a few from google to illustrate.
