Saturday 19 September : London Open House: The Great Barn, Harmondsworth & St Mary Church
From Uxbridge we took a local bus that took us on a long route to explore the area and Brunel university .
This great medieval barn (1426), over 190 feet long and nearly 40 feet high, is the last of a series of enormous, cathedral-like barns built on this site in Harmondsworth. It was hard to believe still in London, very pituresque Harmondsworth with teh chruch , barn, village, pretty house then soon realise it was the place that had been on the news all week as it is the place currently under threat from thrid runway.
The Barn was so impressive size wise and beautiful ceiling, the WI was theer trying to enrol us, they had some horses display too. This is also an EH site. Very hard to believe just a few bus stops from Heathrow
We also visited the St Mary Church next door, a lovely chruch with a beautiful altar, crocheted cushions and lots of skulls and open graves
Ended a good day in the local pub before the long journey back from Heathrow to Wood Green , very odd to take tube at Heathrow not returning from holiday or luggage less :)
cool granary feet :)
beautiful stained glass
loved this altar
