Saturday 12 September: L'iles des Machines

Our main reason for going to Nantes and whoaaaaaaa one of the most beautiful and weird place to explore, steampunk meet them park meet old fashion fairground...

Le Grand Elephant
As soon as we arrived at L'iles des Machines we were confronted (or more watered) by their grand elephant . The way he walks is so elegant and impressive and the ride on it was so wonderful as you can see from the first floor all the mechanics and from the top it is just so cool!!!. What i love the most is the details, the exotic doors , the carved gargoyles, the way the eyelashes flutter, the tail moves...so so beautiful and so whoaa when it goes past you...we even returned the next day to have coffee there just to have a giant mechanical elephant walking past :) just looking at photos makes me smile again and again

The Machine Gallery.
As well as riding a giant elephant, you also get to visit the working space where the creatures are made, the workshop itself (no photos) is where next city invading project are mad and there is an impressive scale creature being build as we speak J. Then there's the show-and-tell area where you can see the prototypes and models of their next project for the Iles (Started with the elephant, then the carousel). In 2019 there will be a two hundred foot tall artificial tree with each branch inhabited by giant rideable caterpillars, insects and arachnids and topped by two humungous herons that take-off and circle the structure with regular under-slung baskets full of passengers (as Simon phrase it so well) we are already plotting a revisit to see that.  Lucky Rob was chosen from the audience to fly in the giant mechanical heron that flapped its way over the model tree.

Three old fashion fairground carousels stacked together.. Wondefully strange and disturbing marine creatures go around in magical way. Gosh it was so hard selecting which to go on so ended up buying 3 goes so we could try all floors. On the lower floor “seabeds”, I decided to ride the Reverse Propulsion Squid and Simon the exploring Machine that dives deep into the machine room but there were Giant Crab, Bathyscaphe, box fish, nemo shell …In the abyss, the creatures  hang 5 metres above the seabeds, there you can ride together, so we went into some weird looking fish with scary teeth’s for 4 people so aly manipulated the mouth, I was on eyes and top fins duties whilst Simon and Rob where on more fins and  other leavers duties. On the sea surface, at the top, a rotating plateau, sweeps away boats, marine harnesses and other flying Fish, a storm Boat, Nutshells and Jellyfish, in a raging whirlpool of 24 big mechanical waves. We tried a few there from se horses to turtles, seashell and sea dragons…it was just so much fun and being so quiet we had time to watch and pick which to play in .
