The Chauvet-Pont-d'Arc Cave [Jul. 27th, 2015|06:07 pm]

Friday 17 July: The Chauvet-Pont-d'Arc Cave

The Chauvet-Pont-d'Arc Cave recently opened near my parents, a long project to make a perfect replica of the original that contains the earliest known and best preserved figurative cave paintings in the world. Most of the artwork dates to the earlier, Aurignacian, era (30,000 to 32,000 years ago). Named by Unesco as Mankind First Masterpiece.
The murals are just amazing, so dynamics with lions , horses, hyenna, cave bears. All made in different styles red ochre hand prints and pigment hand stencils lines , dots to carved into the soft clay. The tour is a bit fast but then there is such a big demand. The way they re-created the cave is clever and beautiful but i guess it does not have the same feeling than whn going in a cave. However the reproduction are stunning and at least we get to see it all in context. NO photos inside but some from online to try illustrate and some taken in museum.

In the afternoon it was packing time and inthe evening we were invited for Paella at Veronique mum next door...cooking one of my favorite meal :) great way to end and say goodbye to everyone...

That looks really interesting; we went to the Balzi Rossi caves near Menton, which has also got a good museum of prehistoric artefacts, but doesn't have cave paintings, or reproductions of paintings.
Have you seen the Lascaux reproduction paintings?
