Alden Biesen [Jun. 26th, 2015|05:39 pm]

Wednesday 17 June: Alden Biesen

Aftre an horrible night it was hard to get motivated or even alive but this was the day we planned to see the Tower of Apocalypse) as the car was empty and so safe to leave about...so despite no sleep and fragile bodies we made it out ....first stop was the castle of Alden Biesen, the knights of the Teutonic Order originally founded the Landcommanderij Alden Biesen ("commandery of Alden Biesen") in the 11th century, but the current buildings were constructed between the 16th and 18th centuries. It was the headquarters of a bailiwick or province of the Teutonic Order in the region of the Maas and Rhine. On 8 March 1971 the building burnt down and was acquired by the government and restored, today as a cultural centre and conference centre.
An easy , free and lovely little stop on our way to liege and the sun was shining :) Theer was a little museum, church, lovely ground and fancy gardens.
