|Day 1 in Budapest: Funicular, Castle, climbing Hills and Labyrinth. (part1)
||[Jan. 21st, 2014|12:10 pm]
Thursday 16 January|
The day started with a walk around the river (mostly due to taking wrong turn) still we got to see what we will be climbing later.
The Castle Hill Funicular, was a cute little thing. The line was opened in 1870 .
views of where we are going through the early morning mist
We had a wander around the Buda district castle (mostly museums)
Fishermen’s Bastion is very pretty white fortication on a hill and cute twirly stairs
just a weird cute madonna
View of Parliament
there a very nice looking restaurant in top tower (but very pricey)
Matthias Church was quite spectacular on the inside, busyness and colours just as I love my religious buildings, some section mixed Morris and psychedelic. Stunning.
We then went to visit the Labyrinth, not as exciting as the original sounded (sadly closed) but another version. This was really lots of interconnected series of cellars and natural caves with random selection of historical masonry exhibits, some dummies enacting scenes from some ball and a Dracula "grave stone". Just weird but quite atmospheric.
Perfect timing as we return into daylight we caught the Change of the Guards which was quite a fun affair to watch with lots of gun twirling and had a wander around the castle.
spidery gates :)
Royal Palace ( was totally destroyed in 1686), now host the National Gallery , the Budapest History Museum and National Széchényi Library
Down one hill to climb another, this time Gellert Hill
The Bishop Gellert's statue wasn’t quite as fancy as postcard due to winter lack of vegetation and no waterfall but quite a trek up hill to the Citadel and liberation monument.
my photo were just too murky or dark
looks like this with water and foliage
and back down :)
Back down to visit the Cave Church, that was quite fantastic as a lovely candlelit church inside the rock. It has a unique setting inside a natural cave system formed by thermal springs, a lot bigger than expected , as it is filled with little chapels. One chapel has incredible wood carving furnitures and hotel, very unusual .
Found a lovely slightly Alice theme cafe for yummy hot chocolate and snacks
he was just super cute especially his feet :)
alcoholic white hot chocolate :)
part 2 coming :)
