Monday 24 May: Clevedon Seafront & Clevedon Court

Seafront: A typical bracing Monday bank Holiday by the seaside :) Lovely old pier and crazy wind, the swimsuits stayed in the suitcases on that occasion sadly.

Clevedon Court
A lovely 14th-century manor house and 18th-century terraced garden perfect for rolling down hill. Especially loved the shrouded lady and their unusual german paitings where you could see 3 completely different images depending which side you stand on. Also a great pottery collection and lovely flowers in the garden. http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/clevedon-court/

Ah... well I know this area, I did it as part of my geology mapping in the third year of my degree (in 1987, good grief...). Two repeated sequences of Devonian and Carboniferous rocks forming the two sides of the Vale of Gordano, draped with later Triassic sediments. The point of the scissors fault that separates the two sequences is where the M4 cuts through just next to Clevedon Court. My Gran lived in Western-Super-Mare so I stayed with her for the several weeks it took to complete the project.

Liked Clevedon, typical Victorian seaside town. Lovely crinoidal limestones on that beach too, and a thin layer of greenish montmorillonite gritty clay deposited by a local volcano back in the Carboniferous.
